What do Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Batista, Dominik Mysterio, Santos Escobar, and Carlito all have in commonplace? Rey Mysterio has felt the sting of betrayal from every one in every of them. The iconic luchador, known for his excessive-flying style and unwavering loyalty, has persevered through a sequence of heartbreaking betrayals for the duration of his storied WWE career.
In 2005, Mysterio captured the WWE Tag Team Championship with Eddie Guerrero. However, Guerrero’s choice to prove himself led to anxiety among the partners. This culminated in a fit at WrestleMania 21, where Mysterio emerged successful. Despite the win, their partnership quickly crumbled as they lost their titles to MNM just weeks later, and Guerrero in the long run turned his again on his lengthy-time friend.
One of the most shocking betrayals in recent WWE memory occurred at Bragging Rights in 2009. During a fatal four-way match for the World Heavyweight Championship, Batista looked Mysterio in the eye and warned him that he would take his head off. True to his word, Batista brutally attacked Mysterio, leaving fans stunned by the sudden and violent betrayal.
The most personal and painful betrayal came at Clash at the Castle in September 2022. Dominik Mysterio, Rey’s own son, turned on his father to join The Judgment Day. The emotional fallout from this betrayal left a deep scar on the WWE Hall of Famer. Adding to the heartbreak, both Santos Escobar and Carlito have also turned their backs on Mysterio, abandoning the Latino World Order (LWO) in the process.
In a recent interview, Rey Mysterio opened up about why he has faced so many betrayals throughout his career. His introspective response sheds light on his trusting nature and hints at a potential breaking point:
“I’m too friendly with people and because I don’t know how to get mad and I can’t be the bad guy, even at home. My wife sometimes will tell me, ‘You have to show them a little bit more attitude.’ I’m just so chill. I’m so relaxed. I can’t change that character I’ve been for so many years, my whole life. I always end up trusting the wrong people and that’s my problem. Maybe one day I’ll just snap and go crazy.”
Mysterio’s reflections reveal a man who has remained true to his character, both in the ring and in his personal life. His inability to adopt a more aggressive persona has led to repeated heartbreak. Yet, his statement about potentially snapping one day hints at a deeper struggle within the legendary wrestler.
Despite the betrayals, Mysterio has shown resilience. On the May 27th edition of Raw, he exacted a measure of revenge by defeating Carlito, a man he had brought back to WWE as part of the LWO. This victory, though small, offered a glimpse of redemption for Mysterio, demonstrating that even in the face of repeated betrayal, he remains a formidable competitor.
Rey Mysterio’s story is one of loyalty, heartbreak, and an unwavering spirit. His journey through WWE has been marked by incredible highs and devastating lows, all underscored by his trusting nature. As fans, we can only hope that Mysterio finds the balance he seeks, whether it’s through continued perseverance or an eventual, explosive release of the frustrations he has long held inside.
