The Injury and Initial Surgery
Della Maddalena suffered a significant injury to his left forearm while defeating Gilbert Burns in the third round on March 10. The individual, aged 27, had surgery soon after the match, believing he would be able to recuperate before UFC 305 in Perth on August 18. Yet, the journey towards healing was harder than expected.
Complications and Multiple Surgeries
Della Maddalena has encountered many problems during her post-surgery recovery process. He explained on Instagram the series of events that resulted in his choice to withdraw from the fight. He wrote that his wound started splitting ten days post-surgery, signaling an infection. This disturbing advancement required another surgery, during which the surgical area was sanitized, and the metal plate in his arm was substituted. He stayed in the hospital for nine days getting IV antibiotics before moving to oral antibiotics.
In spite of these attempts, the infection did not go away. During a period of five weeks, multiple abscesses developed at the wound location, necessitating incision and drainage procedures to eliminate bacteria. Most recently, Della Maddalena had another surgery to remove infected tissue and bone. He expects to have more surgeries in the next few weeks to fully eliminate the infection.
A Heartbreaking Decision
The string of medical setbacks has forced Della Maddalena to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the highly anticipated UFC 305 event in his hometown. Expressing his disappointment, he wrote, “(It’s) a tough pill to swallow. At the moment, I am focused on recovery, ridding my body of infection, and allowing the bone to mend. Planning to get my arm back to 100%, which, if all goes well, will be in 12 weeks’ time.”
