Every match: our commentary

Wilder vs. Fury · Dec 1, 2018

Split draw · 115–111 Wilder, 114–110 Fury, 113–113 · Staples Center, Los Angeles

Fury, three years removed from beating Wladimir Klitschko and after a long layoff, out-boxed Wilder for most of the night. Wilder dropped him in the ninth and then flattened him with a right-left in the 12th. Fury somehow rose before the count of ten and finished the round. The judges' split draw meant Wilder kept the title.

Wilder vs. Fury II · Feb 22, 2020

Tyson Fury won · TKO (corner stoppage), R7 1:39 · MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas

Fury promised to walk Wilder down instead of out-boxing him, and did. He dropped Wilder in the third, bloodied his ear, dropped him again in the fifth and battered him until Wilder's corner threw in the towel in the seventh.

Fury vs. Wilder III · Oct 9, 2021

Tyson Fury won · KO, R11 1:10 · T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas

Wilder, heavier and more aggressive, was dropped in the third, then put Fury down twice in the fourth. Fury recovered, dropped Wilder again in the tenth and knocked him out with a right hand in the 11th, in one of the best heavyweight fights of the century.

The backstory

After the first fight, both men claimed they had won. After the second, Wilder blamed his heavy ring-walk costume and made accusations against Fury and his own trainer, and pursued arbitration to enforce a rematch clause, which forced the third fight instead of a planned Fury vs. Anthony Joshua undisputed bout.

The trilogy turned Fury from a comeback story into the lineal heavyweight champion of his era, and it was the end of Wilder's time as champion.

How fans and critics reacted

The 12th-round recovery in Los Angeles became one of the most replayed moments in modern boxing. The third fight was named Fight of the Year by The Ring and is regularly called one of the best heavyweight fights of the 21st century.

Wilder's excuses after the second fight were widely criticized, and he later expressed respect for Fury after the third.

Our take

Fury, 2–0–1. He was the better boxer in the first fight, overpowered Wilder in the second and survived the hardest punches of his career to win the third.

Our view: Wilder deserves more credit than the record gives him. The first and third fights only became classics because his right hand was the most dangerous punch in the division.

Our verdict: Tyson Fury.
