What happened
2026 has been the year of the heavyweight shake-up. With Oleksandr Usyk giving up his belts, three of the four major titles have new holders, and the two fights between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley were the defining matchup of the year so far.
Dubois–Wardley was a two-act drama. In May in Manchester, Wardley dropped Dubois in the first and third rounds before Dubois came back to stop him in the 11th and take the WBO title. The October rematch at the O2 was over almost as soon as it started: Dubois knocked Wardley down about 17 seconds in with a straight right, and Wardley’s corner threw in the towel in round two.
Hrgovic’s breakthrough: Filip Hrgovic survived a second-round knockdown to stop 21-year-old Moses Itauma in the ninth round for the vacant IBF title, handing Itauma his first defeat and ending his bid to become the youngest heavyweight champion since Mike Tyson in 1986.
Our take
the Usyk–Verhoeven result in Giza still bothers us. The referee waved the fight off after the bell to end the 11th round, with Verhoeven level or ahead on the cards; a former kickboxer nearly beating the best heavyweight of his era deserved a cleaner ending. The Mayweather–Pacquiao rematch, planned for September 2026 on Netflix, was postponed indefinitely in June.
