What happened
The 20th CrossFit Games, held July 22–26 at the SAP Center in San Jose with opening events at the ranch where the first Games took place in 2007, crowned James Sprague as men’s champion for the second time and Aimee Cringle as women’s champion for the first time. It was the longest Games ever, with 20 scored events.
Cringle won by a landslide: 136 points clear of Emma Lawson, the largest margin in either individual division. Sprague’s win was much tighter — 27 points over Dallin Pepper.
Our take
Cringle’s dominance suggests a new era in the women’s division rather than a one-off. Twenty events is the right direction: the Games are meant to find the fittest athlete over the widest range of tests, and a longer programme rewards depth over specialists. Justin Medeiros, a two-time champion, finishing fourth shows how far the men’s field has deepened.
