What happened
The 2026 CrossFit Open ran over three weeks from February 26 to March 16, with about 254,000 athletes registered, up roughly 8% from 2025. Colten Mertens won the men’s worldwide leaderboard with just 9 points — the sum of his placings across the three workouts — and Lucy Campbell won the women’s.
How the Open is scored: lower is better. Each athlete’s rank in each workout is added up, so Mertens’ 9 points means an average placing of 3 among tens of thousands of men. Mirjam Von Rohr won 26.1 and finished only two points behind Campbell.
Our take
Open wins do not predict Games wins — neither Mertens nor Campbell won in San Jose — but Campbell’s third place at the Games shows that an Open win is a reliable sign of fitness across the board. The rise in registrations is the best news the sport has had in several years.
