Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev won the UFC 330 main event in Philadelphia on August 15, 2026, beating Ian Machado Garry by decision at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Makhachev moved up from lightweight, where he was champion from October 2022 to 2025, and won the welterweight title from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025. Machado Garry, unbeaten for most of his UFC career and one of the division’s most confident talkers, was the kind of challenger who tests a new champion’s adjustment to a heavier division.

Our take

A decision win over Machado Garry is not the kind of performance that wins highlight reels, but it is the kind that answers the most important question about a champion who has moved up a division: can he control bigger, longer opponents for 25 minutes? Makhachev did.

Welterweight’s contender picture is crowded. Mike Malott‘s knockout of Joaquin Buckley in October adds another name; the division’s next title challenger will likely be decided by one or two more ranked fights before 2027.

We have not been able to verify the judges’ scorecards for this fight, so we report the result as a decision until we can confirm them.

Two-division champions in UFC history

Makhachev joined a short list of fighters to hold UFC titles in two weight classes when he won the welterweight title in November 2025. Moving up from lightweight, he faced the question every two-division champion faces: whether his strength and wrestling translate against naturally bigger opponents. Machado Garry is long, confident and dangerous on the feet, and Makhachev’s win is the clearest evidence yet that they do.

What's next for Makhachev

The welterweight contender picture behind Makhachev is crowded, and the UFC is likely to use one or two more ranked fights to identify his next challenger. Mike Malott’s knockout of Joaquin Buckley in October adds a new name to that conversation.
