Strongman vs Powerlifting: Key Differences

How strongman differs from powerlifting: events, equipment, scoring and the athletes who cross over between the two sports.

Facts last verified: Oct 18, 2026

Both sports reward raw strength, but they test it in very different ways.

Events

Powerlifting has three fixed lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. Strongman changes events from contest to contest: stones, presses, carries, pulls and more.

Scoring

Powerlifting is decided by total: the best successful attempt in each lift, added together. Strongman awards points for placing in each event.

Judging and equipment

Powerlifting uses three referees and strict depth and lockout standards, with separate classic (raw) and equipped divisions. Strongman uses implements such as logs, stones and yokes, and rules vary by contest.

Conditioning

Strongman includes timed medleys and carries, so endurance and speed matter. Powerlifting is about single maximal efforts.

Many strongmen come from powerlifting, because the deadlift and squat strength translate directly. Fewer move the other way, since strongman’s moving events demand conditioning powerlifters rarely train.
