Powerlifting Rules and Referee Commands

The three powerlifts, the referee commands for each, how attempts are judged with white and red lights, and how the total is calculated.

Facts last verified: Oct 18, 2026

A powerlifting meet gives each lifter three attempts at the squat, bench press and deadlift. The best good lift in each counts toward the total.

Squat

The lifter waits for the ‘squat’ command, descends until the top of the hip crease is below the top of the knee, stands back up, and waits for ‘rack’.

Bench press

On ‘start’ the lifter lowers the bar to the chest, holds it motionless until ‘press’, presses to lockout and waits for ‘rack’.

Deadlift

There is no start command. The lifter pulls to a full lockout with knees and hips extended and shoulders back, then waits for ‘down’ before returning the bar under control.

Judging

Three referees judge each attempt. A white light is a good lift and a red light a failed one; two or more white lights mean the lift counts.

Comparing lifters

The IPF uses GL Points to compare lifters of different bodyweights.

Reading a powerlifting result

A lifter’s result shows three attempts at each lift; the best successful attempt counts toward the total. At the 2026 IPF World Classic Championships, Cranon Worford squatted 217.5, 230 and 238 kg, benched 120, 127.5 and 132.5 kg, and deadlifted 225, 245 and 255 kg for a 625.5 kg total — every attempt good.
