The IPF runs separate world championships for Classic (raw) and Equipped powerlifting.
Classic (raw)
Classic lifters may use a lifting belt, knee sleeves and wrist wraps, but no supportive suits or shirts. The IPF’s Classic world championships began in 2012.
Equipped
Equipped lifters also wear supportive gear: a squat suit, a bench shirt and a deadlift suit made of stiff material that stores energy. Equipped lifting has been part of IPF world championships since the 1970s.
Why totals differ
Supportive equipment lets lifters handle heavier weights, especially on the squat and bench, so records are kept separately.
Drug testing
IPF competitions are drug-tested under the WADA code in both divisions.
