What happened
The first Royal Rumble held in Saudi Arabia produced two winners who went on to win world titles at WrestleMania 42. Liv Morgan outlasted Tiffany Stratton in a women’s match that ran over an hour, and Roman Reigns last eliminated Gunther to win his second Rumble, eleven years after his first in 2015.
The match of the night was not a Rumble. Gunther beat AJ Styles by technical submission in a Career Threatening match, which forced Styles to retire from in-ring competition. It was the right way to end a Hall of Fame career: in a long, serious match against the wrestler WWE wanted to build next. Gunther then lasted to the final two of the men’s Rumble the same night, the most efficient night of booking any wrestler had in 2026.
Drew McIntyre’s defense against Sami Zayn looks different in hindsight: Zayn did not win the title here, but he won it five months later at Night of Champions, lost it to CM Punk nine days after that and regained it on September 11.
Our take
the men’s Rumble was the most predictable of the last several years — Reigns’ path to WrestleMania had been obvious since the autumn — but predictable is not the same as wrong. Oba Femi entering at No. 1 and tying Reigns for most eliminations (5) did more for Femi than any single match had, and it seeded his WrestleMania win over Brock Lesnar.
