What happened
The WBC’s annual convention is where one of boxing’s four major sanctioning bodies sets its agenda: mandatory challengers in every weight class, rule changes and elections. It produces decisions rather than fight results, so this page tracks what each convention ordered and what happened next.
The convention that mattered most for 2026 was the 62nd, in Hamburg in December 2024. It approved the Agit Kabayel–Zhilei Zhang interim heavyweight fight, which Kabayel won by knockout in February 2025 — the result that put him in line to be elevated to full WBC champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated in June 2026. It also introduced a requirement that WBC title fighters have a retirement savings plan from 2026, one of the more fighter-friendly rules any sanctioning body has adopted.
Our take
mandatory orders are only as good as their enforcement, and the WBC’s record is mixed — the Hamburg report itself noted that fighters may choose other paths. The 64th convention in Acapulco in November 2026 will have to decide who Kabayel’s mandatory challenger is now that Dubois (WBO) and Hrgovic (IBF) hold the other belts.
