Boxing Belts Explained: WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring

What the four major boxing belts are, who awards them, how The Ring belt differs, and why one division can have several champions.

Facts last verified: Oct 18, 2026

Boxing has no single league, so world titles come from independent sanctioning bodies. Four are recognized as major.

The four major belts

  • WBA (World Boxing Association): the oldest, founded in 1921 as the National Boxing Association. It awards ‘Super’ and ‘Regular’ titles, which can mean two WBA champions in one division.
  • WBC (World Boxing Council): founded in 1963 and based in Mexico City; known for its green-and-gold belt.
  • IBF (International Boxing Federation): founded in 1983 in New Jersey; strict about mandatory challengers.
  • WBO (World Boxing Organization): founded in 1988 in Puerto Rico; the fourth belt in the undisputed set.

The Ring championship

The Ring magazine, founded in 1922, awards its own belt to the lineal, top-ranked champion of each division. It does not charge sanctioning fees, and many fans treat it as the ‘people’s’ title.

Vacating, interim and elevated champions

A champion who cannot or will not defend can vacate a belt. Bodies also name interim champions when a champion is inactive, and can elevate an interim champion to full champion, as the WBC did with Agit Kabayel in June 2026 after Oleksandr Usyk vacated.

The heavyweight division is the clearest example of how the four belts interact. Oleksandr Usyk held all four until he vacated the WBO in November 2025 and the other three in June 2026; within three months, three different men held three of the titles.

Regular, interim and 'super' titles

Sanctioning bodies sometimes create extra titles. An interim champion fills in when the full champion is unavailable; the WBA has also used ‘super’ and ‘regular’ titles at the same weight. When we list a world champion, we mean the full champion recognised by that body.

FAQ

All four major belts carry weight. Holding all four at once, being undisputed, is the highest honor.

Why does boxing have so many champions?

Each sanctioning body crowns its own champion in every division, and some bodies award more than one tier of title.
