What happened

The 34th season of The Ultimate Fighter, featuring bantamweights and strawweights, ended at UFC Vegas 121. The men’s final finished in controversy: Mehemmedali Osmanli landed an illegal knee to the head of a grounded Ilimbek Akylbek Uulu, and referee Kerry Hatley disqualified him at 2:19 of the first round.

History, of a kind: Akylbek became the first fighter from Kyrgyzstan to win The Ultimate Fighter. Osmanli’s nine-fight winning streak ended on the foul. Tina Black won the women’s tournament.

Our take

a disqualification is the worst way to crown a TUF winner, and the UFC would be wise to book the rematch so Akylbek can win the title in a way nobody can argue with. The format still produces UFC-ready prospects, but it no longer produces stars the way the 2005 Griffin–Bonnar finale did.
