What happened

The IPF World Open Equipped Championships are the world title meet for lifters who use supportive suits and bench shirts. The 2025 edition in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, produced 38 world records from around 200 athletes, and included 21 Special Olympics athletes — the most ever at an IPF championship of its kind.

Why records fall so often: equipped lifting has a smaller, more specialised field than Classic, and improvements in suit and shirt technology mean records move faster. That is part of the appeal and part of the criticism.

Our take

equipped powerlifting is the sport’s original form and still produces its heaviest numbers, but the energy — and the TV audience — has moved to Classic. We will publish class winners for the 2026 championships in Istanbul (November 9–15) once official results are released.
