SummerSlam, first held in 1988, is WWE's biggest event of the summer and has run over two nights since 2025.

SummerSlam is WWE's second-biggest event and the centrepiece of its summer, usually held in a football stadium at the start of August. It is where storylines from WrestleMania either peak or reset, and where WWE tends to stage its biggest title changes of the second half of the year.

Since 2025 SummerSlam has run over two nights, mirroring WrestleMania. Each night has a world title match or a major attraction in the main event.

A fan's guide

SummerSlam is the show where WWE is most willing to change direction, and many of the company's biggest second-half storylines start or finish here. Since the move to two nights, the undercard has more room, which is why secondary titles changed hands on Night 2 in 2026.

For fans attending, SummerSlam is usually held in an NFL stadium in early August, and ticket demand is second only to WrestleMania. In the US it streams on ESPN, with Raw on Netflix carrying the build-up.

Our take

SummerSlam 2026 was a better show than it was an event: the matches were good, but both world champions retained, which left the weekend without a defining moment at the top. The mid-card made up for it, with new United States, Intercontinental and interim women's champions.

We think SummerSlam is at its best when it is allowed to be the year's turning point rather than a sequel to WrestleMania. The 2026 card leaned toward continuation; for 2027 we would like to see WWE use it to crown a new world champion.

What's next

SummerSlam 2027 is expected in early August; WWE has not announced the city. The next major events on WWE's calendar are Crown Jewel and Survivor Series.
