Jun 2026Usyk vacated 3 heavyweight belts

A boxer is undisputed when he holds all four major belts at once. Only Henry Armstrong and Terence Crawford have been undisputed in three weight classes. The heavyweight titles split again in 2026 after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the WBA, WBC and IBF belts.

A boxer is undisputed champion when he or she holds the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO world titles in the same weight class at the same time. Because the four sanctioning bodies each order their own mandatory challengers, keeping all four belts is difficult, and undisputed champions often vacate one or more titles.

The Ring magazine's championship belt is often contested alongside the four major titles but is not required for undisputed status.

A fan's guide

The four major belts each have their own rankings and mandatory challengers, so an undisputed fight usually requires all four sanctioning bodies to agree on timing. That is why undisputed fights are rare and why undisputed champions often vacate soon after.

Our explainer on boxing belts explains the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles in more detail.

Our take

Undisputed fights have produced the best boxing of the 2020s because they force the best to fight the best. Their weakness is fragility: as soon as a champion is undisputed, the sanctioning bodies' mandatory orders start pulling the titles apart.

The heavyweight division is the clearest example: Usyk unified twice and then gave the belts up, and the division now needs at least two unification fights before it has an undisputed champion again.

What's next

The most likely next step at heavyweight is a WBO–IBF unification between Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic, who called for the fight after Dubois' October 17 win.
