What Does Undisputed Champion Mean in Boxing?

Undisputed champion explained: holding the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts at once, why it's rare, and who has done it in three weight classes.

Facts last verified: Oct 18, 2026

In the four-belt era a boxer is undisputed when he or she holds the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles at the same time.

Why it’s rare

Each body has its own rankings and mandatory challengers, and the best fighters are often tied to different promoters and broadcasters. Bringing all four belts together means satisfying every body and getting rival business partners to agree.

Three-division undisputed champions

Only two men are recognized as undisputed in three weight classes: Henry Armstrong and Terence Crawford. Crawford retired in December 2025.

How undisputed status ends

Undisputed status ends when a champion loses, retires, moves divisions or vacates one of the belts. Heavyweight is the most recent example: Oleksandr Usyk vacated the WBO belt in November 2025 and the WBA, WBC and IBF belts on June 26, 2026.

Undisputed vs. unified

A unified champion holds two or three of the four belts. Only all four make a champion undisputed.
