What happened
SummerSlam 2026 in Minneapolis kept both world champions in place and moved the mid-card titles instead. CM Punk retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on Night 1, and Roman Reigns closed Night 2 by beating Seth Rollins, the rivalry that had followed him since WrestleMania.
Oba Femi is now a made man. Beating Brock Lesnar once at WrestleMania could be explained away as a quick upset. Beating him again inside Hell in a Cell cannot. Femi ended the summer with two wins over the biggest attraction of the last two decades, and he turned down Paul Heyman’s approach on Raw in October, which tells you WWE sees him as a top babyface rather than another Heyman guy.
If there is a criticism, it is that two near-identical title results (Punk over Rhodes, Reigns over Rollins) made the weekend feel like a holding pattern for the top of the card.
Our take
the Night 2 undercard was the most interesting part of the weekend. Baron Corbin ending Trick Williams’ US title run, Chad Gable taking the Intercontinental title from Penta and Chelsea Green winning an interim WWE Women’s title in a five-way ladder match all reset SmackDown and Raw for the autumn. Kevin Owens’ four-way win made him No. 1 contender to Punk’s title, a match that was never needed in the end: Sami Zayn won the title on September 11.
