What happened

The road from the Open to the 2026 Games ran through an online quarterfinal (March 26–30), won by Austin Hatfield and Kyra Milligan, and a semifinal stage of ten in-person events around the world plus online semifinals from June 11 to 15. Thirty men, thirty women and twenty teams qualified for San Jose.

The quarterfinal is back: after it was dropped for 2025, CrossFit restored it for 2026 and widened the Open cut to the top 25% of athletes, giving far more people a second stage to compete in.

Our take

the licensed in-person semifinals produce better competition and better television than the old online qualifiers, but they also make qualification depend on which event an athlete can travel to. The French Throwdown, where Aimee Cringle qualified behind Mirjam Von Rohr, turned out to contain the eventual women’s champion.
