The Money in the Bank ladder match debuted at WrestleMania 21 in 2005 and became its own event in 2010. The winner holds a contract for a world title match at any time. At the 2026 event in New Orleans, Penta and Tiffany Stratton won the briefcases.

In a Money in the Bank ladder match, the first wrestler to climb a ladder and pull down a briefcase wins a contract for a world championship match at any time and place of their choosing for the next year. The holder can cash in after a champion has just defended, which is why the briefcase has produced some of WWE's most memorable title changes.

The match debuted at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. The women's version followed in 2017, and the event has been a standalone premium live event since 2010.

A fan's guide

The ladder matches are the obvious draw, but the briefcase's real drama comes afterwards. A holder can cash in at any moment for a year, so every title match on Raw or SmackDown becomes a possible ambush. The tell-tale sign is a champion who has just won a long, exhausting match — and the music of the briefcase holder.

The event itself has moved around the calendar in recent years; in 2026 it was held in October in New Orleans, which put the briefcases in play for Crown Jewel, Survivor Series and the Road to WrestleMania 43.

Our take

The briefcase works because it creates suspense across months of television. The best cash-ins are surprises that also make sense, and that is the test for Penta and Tiffany Stratton: both have obvious targets, and both are better served by a cash-in that ends a long reign than one that interrupts a fresh one.

We would also like WWE to keep Money in the Bank in a summer-to-autumn window where a cash-in can reshape the Road to WrestleMania; October 2026 is a good spot for it.

What's next

Penta and Tiffany Stratton hold their contracts for a year. Watch Crown Jewel on November 7 and Survivor Series on November 28 — champions who have just wrestled long matches are the classic cash-in target.
