What happened
SmackDown in Sacramento was a set-up show five days after Money in the Bank. Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn opened by saying he had been targeted by the men who lost the ladder match — Je’Von Evans, CM Punk and Kevin Owens — and pointed toward Roman Reigns and Crown Jewel. Trick Williams, who is feuding with Zayn, then beat Johnny Gargano.
The main event: Cody Rhodes beat US Champion Baron Corbin by disqualification when Randy Orton attacked, and Rhodes and Orton finished the show staring each other down. Rhodes vs. Orton was the WrestleMania 42 Night 1 main event; reviving it in October suggests WWE wants a fresh version of that match for the road to WrestleMania 43 in Riyadh.
Our take
two disqualification finishes and an injury stoppage on one episode is a lot of non-finishes. They protect everyone involved, but they also make the show feel unfinished. Nick Aldis promising an official match between Kevin Owens and CM Punk once both are healthy is the most interesting thread SmackDown has going into November.
