For the first time, four true freshmen won national titles in the same year: Forrest, Vega, Robideau and Stanford’s Aden Valencia. Forrest and Vega finished the season unbeaten. Minnesota’s Max McEnelly, who lost the Big Ten final to Penn State’s Rocco Welsh two weeks earlier, won the title at 184.
Our take
Penn State’s dynasty is now at a level the sport has rarely seen: three straight scoring records, and a margin over second place of 50.5 points. Its depth showed all season — at the Southern Scuffle in January it won with five champions, four of whom were not its starters in March.
But the most important story of the 2026 tournament may be Oklahoma State. Three freshman champions is the foundation of a program that can challenge Penn State within two or three years, and the sport needs that challenge.
