What happened
The July edition of Saturday Night's Main Event at Madison Square Garden was a two-week bridge to SummerSlam, and it was booked like one. CM Punk and Cody Rhodes teamed to beat Gunther and Sami Zayn in the main event after SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis got involved and pinned Gunther, which set up Gunther against Aldis at SummerSlam and Punk against Rhodes for the WWE Championship.
The title change: Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship from Paige and Brie Bella, who had won the belts at WrestleMania 42. The Bellas and Paige then lost again to Fatal Influence at SummerSlam.
Our take
a general manager pinning a top heel is the kind of finish that usually costs the authority figure credibility, but here it gave Gunther a reason to fight someone who is not a wrestler — and he won that match comfortably on SummerSlam Night 1. Danhausen beating JD McDonagh with help from NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns was pure Saturday-night television, and it worked.
