What happened

WrestleMania 42 was a show about coronations. Four women’s or secondary titles changed hands across two nights, and the Sunday main event delivered the result the Royal Rumble had set up in January: Roman Reigns, the men’s Rumble winner, pinned CM Punk to take the World Heavyweight Championship in a main event that ran close to 34 minutes.

The two world title matches went in opposite directions. Cody Rhodes closed Night 1 by retaining the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton, the Elimination Chamber winner, in a 22-minute match that felt like the end of a chapter rather than the start of one. Reigns’ win was the bigger swing: it ended Punk’s second reign and put the Raw title on the company’s most proven draw heading into a summer built around his rivalry with Seth Rollins.

The women’s division was the real story. Liv Morgan won the Women’s World title from Stephanie Vaquer on Night 1 after winning the Royal Rumble, Rhea Ripley took the WWE Women’s title from Jade Cargill on Night 2 after winning the Elimination Chamber, and Becky Lynch regained the Women’s Intercontinental title. Every one of those results paid off a storyline that had been built for months, which is exactly what WrestleMania should do.

Attendance: WWE’s announced two-night figure was 97,126 (47,093 and 50,033). Reported in-arena figures were higher, so treat attendance numbers from any source as promotional.

Our take

the smartest booking on the card was Oba Femi beating Brock Lesnar in under five minutes. A short, decisive win over Lesnar is the fastest way to make a new heavyweight, and it set up the Hell in a Cell rematch at SummerSlam. The weakest note was the opener: a celebrity-heavy six-man tag is a fine way to start a stadium show, but at seven minutes it was over before the crowd could invest in it.
